The Rutherford Group of Companies are a major supplier of temporary electrical equipment and cables for the international tunnelling, mining and general construction industries. Rutherford has developed into a Single Supplier Solution operation from modest beginnings in the business of cable repairs when established in 1981. Its current activities are involved in many of the most prestigious tunnelling projects around the world. From this small beginning in the Hunter Valley the Group expanded its operations throughout Australia and, more recently has set up International operations with Rutherford Power Asia in Singapore and Rutherford Power Europe in Milan.

Rutherford has established itself as a major supplier to the International Tunnelling Industry, supplying equipment and cables for Surface Infrastructure, TBM Supply and Drill and Blast applications, predominantly in connection with the temporary electrical supply required during the construction phase. Product offerings range from single items to complete turn-key electrical equipment packages. They are able to offer electrical packages based around the purchase, buy-back or hire of products that allow you to gain the maximum benefit of high quality, reliable equipment at a cost effective price. RUTHERFORD HIRE INTERNATIONAL

Rutherford has a substantial fleet of equipment and cables, available at strategic locations in Europe, South East Asia and Australia, to enable them to react quickly to the needs of their clients. This fleet of equipment is available for short, medium or long term hire and can be tailored to suit your specific project application. All hire equipment is fully re-conditioned and tested prior to despatch and comes complete with detailed operation and maintenance instructions. The equipment also comes with a project duration warranty for additional peace of mind, making it ideal for all temporary electrical applications.

COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES

Rutherford can contract for a complete turn-key electrical engineering service for your tunnelling project or in-service transport tunnel, but it can also supply specific specialist services to your requirements.

MAJOR PROJECTS

Rutherford Group has supplied many of the leading tunnelling projects, both in Australia and overseas, with a wide range of electrical products and engineering services. Some of the projects supplied outside of Australia are:

  • The SMART (Stormwater Management & Road Tunnel) project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – supply of electrical distribution equipment to contractor Wayss & Freytag
  • The Route 8 Eagle’s Nest Tunnel project part of the HK$6.8 billion Cheung Sha Wan to Sa Tin section of the route 8 highway project in Hong Kong – supply of turn-key electrical solution to Leighton Kumagai JV
  • The Johnstone’s Hill Tunnel project in New Zealand – supply of substations and high-voltage cable solution to Northern Gateway Alliance
  • The Circle Line MRT Projects in Singapore – supplying complete turn-key electrical solutions to Taisei Corporation (Contract C854), Who Hup NCC JV (Contract C855) and Sembcorp (Contract C856)
  • The Bakun AC Hydropower Tunnel project in The Philippines – supply of turnkey electrical solution to contractor Transfield

Within Australia most of the leading tunnelling projects have been supplied by the Rutherford Group. These include:

  • Supply of the temporary electrical reticulation package for the A$2.54-bn Mitcham-Frankston Project to the Thiess/John Holland JV;
  • The development electrical system as a turnkey electrical solution were engineered by Rutherford for the Baulderstone Hornibrook/Bilfinger + Berger JV for the Sydney Cross City Tunnel Project;
  • For the BHP Port Headland Iron Ore Briquette Plant Tunnel Rutherford supplied a turnkey electrical solution for development electrical system to Transfield. Transfield were also the customer for the Melbourne City Link Tunnel (turnkey electrical solution in JV with Obayashi), the Ryde Stormwater Tunnel Project (turnkey electrical solution for development electrics), the Northside Storage Tunnel Project (turnkey electrical solution for development electrics in JV with Sydney Water), and the Wombarra Stormwater Drainage Tunnel project (turnkey electrical installation);
  • Rutherford supplied a turnkey electrical solution for the Sydney Parramatta Rail Link to the Thiess/Hochtief contracting JV;
  • The development electrical system as a turnkey electrical solution for the Transgrid Cable Tunnel Project to the Walter Construction Group;
  • A turn-key electrical solution for the Buranda Tunnel of the Brisbane Busways Project Stage 1 to contractor Thiess;
  • The supply of a turn-key electrical equipment and cable package for the Lane Cove Tunnels to contractor Thiess John Holland JV
  • The electrical equipment and cable package for the Sydney Desalination Project to contractor Bluewater JV (John Holland & Veolia)
