A consortium of Italian construction company Astaldi and its Turkish partners Makyol and Gülermak is in the lead to get a EUR751.2 million contract from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's transportation department to build a 21.7 km subway line between the Kadiköy and Kartal districts of Istanbul's Asian side. Astaldi, which is leading the group in the bidding for the contract, could get 42%, or EUR315.4 million, of the total value of the contract which also includes the E&M and signalling technology. Makyol has 41.33% and Gülermak has 16.77%. The Italian-Turkish consortium submitted the low bid against two rival consortia, namely Alarko-OHL (EUR753 million) and Dogu?-Yapi Merkezi-Yüksel-Siemens (EUR779.9 million). A previous tender for the project had been held two-and-a-half years ago but was cancelled, as the construction project was not feasible at the time. The line will be constructed underground but will go above ground wherever possible. The line will have 16 stops. Work is to begin in the second half of the year and last three years, once the contract signing process is concluded. The project will employ 2,000 people. Astaldi, as general contractor and leader of a joint venture with Makyol and Gülermak, and the municipality of Istanbul signed a EUR751 million contract for the construction of the new Kadiköy-Kartal line in Istanbul. The contract has been signed after the joint venture was named preferred bidder in January. Astaldi's share amounts to EUR315 million. The contract is for the construction of a new 20 km-long double-track underground line, with 16 underground stations, and includes also the supply of electromechanical equipment and the signalling system. First US$117 million tranche of Japanese funding for the cross-Bosphorus rail link has been released to finance consultants to oversee design and tendering of the project and preliminary construction work. Japan's Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund (OECF) has already agreed to provide US$866 million for the US$1.6 billion project. The 13.3 km-long Bosphorus crossing will be combined with upgrading of the existing TCDD suburban lines to create a 76.3 km-long high-capacity railway across the Istanbul conurbation from Gebze to Halkali. The 1.8 km-long earthquake-proof immersed tube crossing will be assembled from 18 sections. It will be accessed by bored approaches from Yenikapi on the European side and Sogutlucesme on the Anatolian side. There will be intermediate stations at Sirkeci and Uskudar where the tunnel passes under the old city. Construction is expected to take around four years. December 1999.

 

Turkey's General Directorate of Railway, Port & Airport Construction has shortlisted three consortia for consultancy and engineering services. They are Pacific Consultancy of Japan with Parsons Brinckerhoff and Yuksel Project; Nippon Koei, Mott MacDonald, Louis Berger, Su Yapi Muhendislik, Nippon Civic and Sverdrup; and Prokon Muhendislik, Chiyoda, Akun, DE-Consult, Bung, TEC and Setec. The consultancy contract will be awarded with the aim of starting work early in 2001. Construction is expected to take around four years. Invitation to prequalify issued by the General Directorate of Railways, Harbours and Airports (DLH) for design and construction of the Istanbul Strait rail tube tunnel called 'Marmaray' and the Gebze-Halkali surface metro system after approval by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). The project includes a 2 km-long two-track immersed tunnel beneath the Bosphorus between the districts of Eminönü on the European side and Üsküdar on the Asian side of Istanbul, two-track approach tunnels on both sides of the immersed tunnel totalling 12 kilometres of combined bored tunnels, cut-and-cover tunnels and open cuts, and four deep underground stations. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has agreed to finance the Bosphorus strait tunnel crossing and 76.3 km-long Gebze-Haydarpasa and Sirkeci-Halkali suburb line paving the way to the tendering phase to be launched by DLH, the general directorate of railways, harbours and airports construction under the ministry of transportation. A 1.8 km immersed tunnel under the Bosphorus strait will be built to link the European and Asian sides and 12 km of connecting tunnels on both sides. The four prequalifiers for the 1.8 km Marmaray tunnel across the Bosphorus strait and associated works, including 12 km of approach tunnels on both sides of the strait, are Kajima / Nishimatsu / Mitsubishi / Enka / Dogus; Hazama / Penta Ocean / Yuksel Guris; Taisei / Kumagai Gumi / Gauma / Nurol; and Obayashi / Construction Center / Kiska / Metis. Construction of the $2.5 billion Marmaray tunnel and the upgrading of existing rail links on both sides will begin in 2004 for completion in 2008. The tunnel will start in Yedikule, continue to Yenikapi and Sirkeci underground stations, cross the strait and be connected to another underground station at Üsküdar. After that point, the line will run above ground in Sogutlucesme. In total, the railway, including the tunnel, will be 13.5 km. The Kajima / Nishimatsu / Mitsubishi / Enka / Dogus consortium has withdrawn from the bid for the subsea metro tunnel project to connect the Asian and European sides of Istanbul, also known as Marmaray. The consortium said that the contract conditions were difficult to fulfill. The expiry date for submitting an offer is 3rd October, 2003. Three consortia remain in the race. 38/03.

The transport ministry received two preliminary bids from Turkish-Japanese consortiums in a tender to build a rail tunnel under the Bosphorus straits between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. The first consortium is formed by Taisei, Kumagai Gumi and Turkey's Gama and Nurol. The second group includes Obayashi and Turkey's Yapi Merkezi, Metis and Kiska. The $2.5 billion Marmaray project covers a distance of 13.1 km. The bids will be evaluated within two months. The first tunnel phase of the project, to be financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), is expected to cost around $800 million. The second phase, linking the tunnel to an existing rail line between the stations of Halkali and Gebze, is forecast to cost $700 million, while the trains and signalling in the third phase will cost around $1 billion. A USD2 billion contract for the third crossing of the Bosphorus Strait was signed on 6th May by a consortium between Taisei, Kumagai Gumi, Gama and Nurol. Construction was officially launched on 9th May. The project, also known as Marmaray, includes a 13.3 km tunnel crossing and the upgrade of 63 km of suburban line to create a 76.3 km high capacity line between Gebze and Halkali. The Bosphorus Strait will be crossed by a 1.8 km immersed tube tunnel, composed of 18 elements sunk at a depth of approximately 60 m. CPG Consultants of Singapore has been engaged by Taisei and its JV partners Kumagai, Gama and Nurol to lead the design of the 1,387 m immersed tunnel crossing under the Bosphorus Strait, which is part of the 13,558 m Marmara railway tunnel project to link the Asian and European continents. The USD1 billion project also involves the design and construction of three TBM-driven twin-tube sections (2 x 4,620 m, 2 x 3,343 m and 2 x 2,170 m from east to west), cut-and-cover portions and three underground stations, one on the Asian side (the Usukudar cut-and-cover station) and two on the European side (Yenikapi and Sirkuci, to be built respectively in cut-and-cover and NATM). Deepest station at about 50 m underground. Also Kazlicesme station at grade on the European side. The earthquake-proof immersed tunnel will be one of the deepest of its kind in the world, at 55 m below sea level at its lowest point. It is scheduled to be completed in 2009. Wayss & Freytag using Herrenknecht 6.5 m shield completed first 550 m in very unstable soil consisting of sand, silt, clay and gravel using bentonite and foam. Another 550 m tunnel and two at 800 m to be driven. Best advance 25 m/day. June 1998.

 

Second section in two parts: 3.2 km line through stations at University and Bornova involves 836 m tunnel, 1,480 m cut-and-cover and 715 m at surface; alignment through stations at Bahceliever, Haimevieri, the Islamic Institute, Poligone and F Altay involves 2.19 km of double-track tunnel with internal diameter of 11.8 m to be driven through andesite using NATM techniques. March 1999.

 

Prequalification for phase two cancelled and sent back to the drawing board. Plans now involve constructing just the section from Bahceliever to F Altay which now will comprise a 1.35 km bored tunnel and 2.85 km cut and cover, subject to detailed design. New prequalification planned for May, 2000. October 1999.

 

General contractor Yapi Merkezi reports completion of 11.5 km first stage with ten stations from Ucyol to Halkapynar including the workshop and depot area in less than four years. $600 million contract was handled on a turnkey basis by Adtranz-Yapi Merkezi for Municipality of Greater City of Izmir. Five of the stations and 5.8 km of the line are underground. The stations at Konak, Cankaya and Basmane were constructed by cut-and-cover 10-13 m below sea level using 25-33 m-deep diaphragm walls. The Ummuhan Ana twin tunnels of driven length 2.75 km were in waterlogged ground comprising sands, silts and clays. They were constructed by the Herrenknecht 6.54 m EPB using a VMT guidance system and lined with 1.2 m-wide, 5.7 m elastomeric-gasketted precast concrete 7 + 1 rings. Average advance was 19.2 m/day on the fourth drive with a maximum of 28.8 m or 24 rings in 2 x 12 h shifts. Measured settlements were less than the 10 mm allowable. A U.S.-Turkish consortium has been awarded a contract by State Hydraulic Works of Turkey for the design phase of Alpaslan II Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Project. The value of the design phase contract is $6.98 million. The consortium will negotiate another contract for the construction phase of the project, which is estimated to cost $500 million.

This project is one of nine hydroelectric projects included in the 1998 US-Turkey Energy Protocol initiated by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. It is located in Eastern Turkey on a tributary to the Euphrates River, approximately 30 km north of the city of Mus, and will provide 200 MW of power, while serving as a source of irrigation for more than 70,000 hectares.

Siemens is supplying an operations management and traffic control system to the value of around EUR57 million for 29 tunnels on a 4-lane road from Espiye to the Sarp/Batumi border checkpoint along the coast of the Black Sea in the direction of Georgia's border. A consortium led by Stone & Webster has signed a $10 million contract for the engineering and design for the Konaktepe dam and hydroelectric power plant on the Munzur river near Ovacik in the Tunceli province, east central Turkey. This is the first of two phases of the project. The consortium will then negotiate the construction phase, estimated at $300-$400 million, which includes a 15 km power tunnel. The other members of the consortium are ATA Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., a Turkish construction firm responsible for the dam and civil construction, Strabag of Austria for the tunnel and surge chamber, Soyak Uluslarasi Insaat ve Yatrim A.S., a Turkish construction firm who will assist Strabag with the tunnel and surge chamber, and VA Tech Hydro GmbH & Co., an Austrian electrical and mechanical equipment supplier, who will supply the hydro-mechanical and electrical equipment.

Strabag, member of the Stone and Webster-led Konaktepe consortium including ATA Insaat, Soyak, and VA Tech has awarded consulting services including geophysical surveys, geological and geotechnical modelling for the 14 km-long Konaktepe power tunnel to iC consulenten based in Salzburg, Austria. As of 5th February, 2003 the total excavated length is 3,284 m (3,064 metres from the outlet and 220 m from the inlet). Horse shoe-shaped tunnel with excavation diameter of 4.5 m (21 sq m) and finished diameter 3.5 m. Geology mainly consists of agglomerates and agglomerates and basalts. First
330 metres of the outlet section excavated with Paurat E134 roadheader and the remaining parts using drill/blast with Sandvik Tamrock jumbo, Volvo L-120 loader for loading and Volvo 5350 articulated dump trucks for hauling. Tinsa will build a 11,820 m tunnel for Akenerji, as part of the Uluabat hydropower project in Bursa province, Marmara region. The excavated diameter is 5 m and the lined diameter 4.3 m. The project also includes a surge tank and down surge tunnel. A Herrenknecht slurry and hard rock mixshield will be used. The geology is weak metadetritic formation with clay zone on most of the length (10,800 m) and limestone (1,500 m). The tunnel will be lined with six 1.2 m-long precast concrete segments per ring, produced by the contractor Tinsa. Mucking-out by locomotive and muck cars. Restricted call for tenders, deadline 15th August, 2006 for prequalification for the construction work of the Bagbasi dam and Mavi tunnel (blue tunnel). Work will include construction of the 109 m-high Bagbasi concrete faced rockfill dam and Mavi tunnel, which has an interior diameter of 4 m. As part of the tunnel, 17,061 m will be bored by TBM and 995 m bored by the conventional method. The project is located at Hadim district in the Konya province in Central Anatolia. Highway
Invitation to prequalify, deadline 1st February, 2007 for construction works of five separate highway tunnels and their connection roads. The outlines of the five tenders are as follows:
1) Sariyer-Çayirbasi highway tunnel-Çayirbasi crossing and connection roads-Kestanelik crossing and connection roads: 4,100 metres of tunnel construction
2) Dolmabahçe-Fulya Arasi highway tunnel-Dolmabahçe crossing and connection roads-Fulya crossing and connection roads: 2,027 metres of tunnel construction
3) Eyüp Silahtaraga Caddesi-Gaziosmanpasa Caddesi highway tunnel and flyover with crossing and connection roads: 200 metres of tunnel construction

Within its investment programme, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality awarded last year the Dolmabahçe-Dolapdere-Piyalepasa-Kagithane highway tunnel to a consortium of Kiska Komandit and Mak-Yol at a price of YTL105 million. This is a 2 x 3,800 m-long tunnel, built in NATM using hydraulic hammers. The carriageway width is 9.5 m and the diameter is 14 m.
